TACITUS: AB EXCESSU ETC. I, 65: THE ROMAN ARMY ON THE MARCH-THE ARRIVAL AT THE "LONG BRIDGES"

Before they parted, GERMANICUS asked the LEGATUS to come to his tent. Both formed what we call a contrast: on the one side GERMANICUS, young and amiable, on the other side CAECINA, having been in the army since 40 years, a gruff person. GERMANICUS was in trouble because of ARMINIUS. CAECINA agreed, but he was sure that after having passed the "LONG BRIDGES" they would be out of danger.
After seperating, the "lower" army marched in direction of southwest. Their first camp still was on open land (terrain), but already near wooded hillsides. The next day, they marched through the forests. Neither on the first nor on the second day the enemy showed up. In the afternoon of the second day the head on the cavalry reported that they had arrived at the "LONG BRIDGES".
